Morphological description

Monoecious lianas.

Leaves

Leaves simple, alternate, usually denticulate, penninerved, exstipulate.

Inflorescence

Flowers usually solitary and axillary.

Flowers

Flowers tepals free, imbricate. Usually carpels and stamens many.

Fruit

Fruit a berry. Usually berries red, fused into a head.

Seed

Seed.

Different from: Magnoliaceae: never climbing. - Annonaceae: leaf margin entire, stem on cross section with stellate rays. 

Distribution: A family of 2 genera confined to Southeast Asia, incl. Malesia, with one species of Schisandra in North America.

Notes: Kadsura scandens is used medicinally.
