Morphological description

Herbs.

Leaves

Leaves distichous, crowded; usually linear.

Inflorescence

Inflorescence.

Flowers

Flowers. bisexual, actinomorphic, 3-merous on stalked heads; ovary superior, 1-celled. Usually petals yellow, stamens 3, epipetalous, staminodes 3, fim-briate, alternipetalous.

Fruit

Fruit a capsule, seeds many.

Seed

Seeds many.

Different from: Eriocaulaceae: flower heads usually grey, flowers unisexual, capsule 1-seeded. 

Distribution: A family of two genera, one in South America, the other, Xyris, widespread, mostly in open marshy places.
