Morphological description

Herbaceous.

Leaves

Leaves simple, usually opposite, entire.

Flowers

Flower bisexual, actinomorphic, usually 5-merous, sepals free, petals bifid (spotcharacter #91); ovary superior.

Different from: Aizoaceae: no petals, tepals entire.

Distribution: The family widespread, especially in the northern hemisphere. In Malesia 8 native genera including- Cerastium, herbs of alpine habitats.

Notes: Drymaria is a widespread weed. - Planted as ornamentals: species of Dianthus.
